It’s the summer of 1966 and high school freshman Kaoru Nishimi is struggling to adjust to the latest of many moves in his young life, this time to his uncle’s home in the seaside town of Kyushu. Kaoru Nishimis erster Schultag an der neuen Oberschule in Yokosuka ist lediglich reine Routine für ihn, da er, gezwungen durch den Job seines Vaters, schon oft von Stadt zu Stadt ziehen und die Schule wechseln musste. Da er als intellektueller Schulwechsler stets die Rolle eines Außenseiters annehmen muss, versucht er seine Schulzeiten in den verschiedenen Schulen immer so wenig unangenehm wie möglich zu überbrücken. Doch dieses Mal scheint sich alles anders zu entwickeln.

Erst kommt er der Klassensprecherin Ritsuko Mukae näher, dann dem berüchtigten und gefürchteten Schulschläger Sentarou Kawabuchi, der es sich nicht nehmen lässt, an jeder Schlägerei aktiv beteiligt zu sein. Seltsamerweise scheinen die drei sich zu verstehen, und das besonders, wenn es um ihren gemeinsamen Musikgeschmack geht: Jazz! Kaoru findet sich in einem neuen Lebensabschnitt wieder und fängt an, die Schulzeit in Yokosuka zu genießen.
